Swarco Raiders Tirol defeat Bergamo Lions 28:27

TD Ellingson against Bergamo Lions

In front of 3.700 enthusiastic fans at Tivoli Stadium the Swarco Raiders Tirol celebrated a historic victory over Bergamo Lions basically in the last seconds of the game. The Swarco Raiders for the first time ever defeated an Italian club team in a European Cup game and now advanced for the third time in a row to the EFL semi-finals.

Six years after a heartbreaking 34:35 loss to Bergamo due to a not converted 2-point conversion the game this time was once again decided on the PAT, this time a blocked extra point through NT Gonzalo Segovia.

In general the special teams unit of the Swarco Raiders was very well prepared on this Saturday night. They blocked one punt, converted a first down on a fake punt, made all 4 PATs, recovered a Lions onside-kick and blocked the game deciding Lions PAT.

Not only the special teams were really outstanding in that game, but also the quality coaching. A great job on clock management before half time and during the last offense series before the end of game and the two perfectly well called and executed trick plays that both led to touchdowns by WR Jakob Dieplinger.

Bergamo was the tough opponent that we had expected and prepared for, but it was almost unreal how their QB Allen Jr. played. As if playing in another league he just outran our whole defense on some plays, threw the ball easily 60-65 yards almost across the whole field, and was in some phases of the game not stoppable at all. Would you pressure him and have 1-2 spys on him he would go deep on us, would we drop into coverage and take away the pass, he would take off on his own.

In the end it was a great performance of the players on the field and very smart coaching that made the little difference in that game of two very good European football teams.
