Eidsvoll 1814s Win Close Battle against Avedøre Monarchs
The game proved to be a very tough defensive battle which saw the 1814s come out on top 13-10. This was Eidsvoll’s first official win in international competition and the first win by a Norwegian club in EFAF play in five years.
Following a scoreless first quarter, the scoreboard finally came alive early in the second quarter. All of the scoring in this game would come on four consecutive possessions, two by each club. The Monarchs started the scoring early in the second quarter. The 1814s defense had held the Monarchs to a 30 yard field goal by Peter Fromberg, but the 1814s ran into the kicker. Given a fresh set of downs, the Monarchs capitalized on the very next play as RB Ronny Andersen ran into the end zone from 8 yards out. The extra point was good and with 11:00 to go in the 2nd quarter the score was 0-7 for the Monarchs. But the Monarchs would not get into the endzone again.
Eidsvoll took the next kickoff and responded with an eight play, 78 yard drive that ended with a 21 yard touchdown pass from QB Mike Burton to WR Tristan Solo. The extra point by Iver Holsæter was good and with 7:00 remaining in the 2nd quarter the game was tied again 7-7.
Avedøre took the ball and quickly took the lead again. The Monarchs started their drive with excellent field position at their own 47 yard line. They moved the ball 27 yards before the Eidsvoll defense held. Kicker Peter Fromberg came onto the field again and made a very long 43 yard field goal. The ball just made it over the crossbar and with 4:00 to go until halftime the score was 7-10 for the Monarchs.
Just before the half Eidsvoll responded to this latest score and they put up what would prove to be the winning and final points of the game. Once again the 1814s went on a long drive. This time the 1814s went 82 yards in 10 plays and scored with only 1:06 left until halftime. QB Mike Burton completed a 24 yard touchdown pass to WR Iver Holsæter. The extra point was blocked though, and this would mean that with only a three point lead the Monarchs could tie the game with another field goal. The teams went into the half with Eidsvoll ahead 13-10.
The second half of play saw both defenses take over after the brief offensive show in the 2nd quarter. Both teams were able to move the ball on a limited basis, but could not convert that into any points. Avedøre attempted two fake punts in the 3rd quarter when they were in Eidsvoll territory, but both failed. And Eidsvoll drove the ball to the Monarchs 18 yard line before an interception ended the drive.
The change from the 3rd to the 4th quarter saw the Monarchs deep in Eidsvoll territory. The Monarchs got as close as the 8 yard line before the 1814s pushed them back and stopped them on downs. The 1814s were able to get a couple of first downs to keep the clock running, but they still had to kick the ball back to the Monarchs.
Following a 0 yard punt by Eidsvoll, the Monarchs were in great field position, taking over at the Eidsvoll 47 yard line. They moved the ball to the 26 yard line before the Eidsvoll defense held once again. Peter Fromberg came onto the field again with 3 minutes to go. He attempted another long 43 yard field goal which would have tied the game at 13-13. But the kick sailed just right of the goal posts.
Following the kick, Eidsvoll managed one first down but had to punt the ball away again. This gave the Monarchs one final chance to tie or win the game. After getting one first down, once again the 1814s defense stopped the Monarchs on downs and Eidsvoll had the win. They could celebrate this historic win both for themselves and for American football in Norway.
