PRESS RELEASE: American Football Association of Finland!
Porvoo Butchers took their first ever Finnish Championship last Saturday after defeating Seinäjoki Crocodiles 7-17 (7-7) at Finnair Stadium in front of 1 523 fans and live tv audience on Finnish Urheilukanava. The Finnair Stadium gave a new and special experience to teams and fans as the soccer venue has never hosted american football before. As the final festivities included invitational cheerleading competition and fireworks, the night proved a memorable one for all.

In the game, the Crocodiles, who won the regular season with an 10-0 record, started the game strong. After an 47-yard interception return to Butchers 2 yard line by Crocodiles JANI LINDROTH, fullback VELI-MATTI MÄKI rushed into the endzone and kicker TOMI NATRI conversion Crocodiles lead 7-0 after first quarter. Early in the 2nd quarter Butchers QB PETRUS PENKKI rebounded from the previous mistake and hit WR VILLE KURVINEN for a 40-yard touchdown reception. SAMI MIKKONEN tied the game to 7-7 with a succesful extra point try. As no more scoring occured in the 2nd quarter 7-7 stood as a half time score.

The game swang back and forth but neither team managed to score in the 3rd quarter as turnovers and missed field goal tries stopped good drives and the game seemed to go into overtime. But with 2.53 left in the game Butchers finally broke the tie as NATHAN CONNOR rushed in from 13-yards out. With MIKKONENs extra point Butchers were up 7-14. As the Crocodiles tried to bounce back, QB DAVID BATEMAN was sacked by Butchers SEBASTIAN KARBIN and the loose ball covered by JYRI KONTIAINEN, Butchers had the possession. Crocodiles forced the Butchers to 3 and out but were not able to stop MIKKONEN for hitting a 28-yard field goal to make it a 2-score game with 1.47 left. As Crocodiles did not convert their 4th down in the next drive, Butchers offence had an easy job of taking the knee and starting to celebrate for the championship. Earlier on Saturday Helsinki Roosters defeated Turku Trojans 30-13 (16-6) in the bronze game.

American football season in Finland will continue on 24th of September as Senior National team will host European Champion Sweden in an annual challenge game at Finnair Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 12.30 and tickets are available at www.ticketservicefinland.fi
